The Extended Alimentation Program aims to eradicate malnutrition within entire families by providing bags of food to households that present extreme cases of impoverishment and poor health. Feed the Hungry Nutritionist Ana Laura Rojas Juárez’s recent report on results of the new program are very encouraging!

The program was launched earlier this year in four of the most destitute communities in the county. In the month of August, 36 families, including 45 children, received 64 bags of healthy food and menu ideas for preparation at home. Three nutrition classes were also presented:

Anemia Prevention with a list of foods rich in iron; a Healthy

Feeding workshop for mothers and children with an activity book for follow-up at home; and Sugar Content, including a table showing the most consumed beverages and industrialized products in the communities and their sugar content.

Children were evaluated by observing clinical signs related to nutritional deficiencies and compared to the initial evaluations conducted at the launch of the program in their communities. The children presented noticeable improvements to their skin and a reduction in signs associated with deficiency of vitamin A, iron, essential fatty acids, and dehydration which are due the lack of a varied diet.
