  • Strengthening Support for Children and Families: From Pilot Programs to Lasting Impact
  • July 7, 2026

At Feed the Hungry San Miguel, we are always looking for ways to strengthen our impact and ensure that every resource entrusted to us benefits as many children and families as possible. Over the past several years, we have operated two special pilot initiatives alongside our School Meals Program: the Early Childhood Nutrition Program and the Extended Alimentation Program. These programs were designed to address specific community needs and to help us better understand how we could support vulnerable families beyond the classroom.

    The results have been invaluable.

Through the Early Childhood Nutrition Program, we learned that nutrition education for mothers and caregivers can create lasting change. Families have embraced workshops on healthy eating, meal preparation, and child nutrition, gaining practical tools that continue to benefit their children long after the workshops end.

The Extended Alimentation Program, developed in response to the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, helped us identify families facing significant food insecurity and provided critical support during a time of great need. It also reinforced something we have long believed: our network of schools, teachers, nutritionists, and community partners is one of the most effective ways to identify and support children who need help the most.

After carefully evaluating both programs, we are taking the next step in our evolution. Rather than operating as separate initiatives, the most successful elements of these programs will now be integrated directly into our core School Meals Program. This transition allows us to build on what worked best while creating a more efficient and sustainable model for the future.

By bringing these efforts together, we will continue to provide nutritional support to children in need, expand nutrition education for families, support healthy development during the early years of life, and make the most of every donor dollar by reducing administrative and operational costs. Most importantly, this change ensures that the knowledge, experience, and successes gained through these pilot programs will continue to benefit children and families for years to come.

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, our Nutrition Team and leadership will continue evaluating community needs and refining our approach so that Feed the Hungry remains responsive, effective, and focused on where we can make the greatest difference.

We are grateful to everyone who has supported these programs over the years. Your generosity has helped us learn, grow, and improve. Together, we are building a stronger foundation for the future and creating lasting opportunities for the children and families we serve.
